Premier League Gameweek 1 Overview

Enzo Maresca's Chelsea continued where Pochettino left off, once again underperforming their xG. Jackson led a toothless attack, with his only goal ruled out for offside. Meanwhile, Man City dominated the midfield even without Rodri. Debutant Savinho impressed, but Kovacic stole the show with arguably the best goal of the weekend.

In their Premier League return, Ipswich hosted a lively Liverpool side. Energetic and direct, Liverpool moved the ball quickly but left themselves vulnerable on the break. Despite some shaky moments, Trent’s creativity and precise passes to Salah and Jota proved too much for the newly promoted team.

Arsenal matched City and Liverpool with a 2-0 win. Havertz and Saka set each other up for the goals, but defensive errors from Partey and Saliba required Raya’s interventions to keep a clean sheet.

United started strong against Fulham but faded in the second half, where Fulham had promising spells. A late debut goal from substitute Zirkzee gave United the win, though Rashford and Garnacho missed a chance to double the lead.

Under their new regime, Brighton looked as dynamic as ever, cruising past Everton. Tottenham, meanwhile, were frustrated in a draw at Leicester, with Vardy capitalising on poor marking to grab a late equaliser.

Overall, it was a routine start with wins for the usual contenders. Ipswich and Leicester showed flashes of promise, but Southampton stumbled early. With Brighton and Villa in top form, next week’s matchups for Arsenal and United should be fascinating.
